Guo Fan Art Installation and Jewelry

Guo Fan

Guo Fan is an art installation combined with art jewelry, based on the culture of overseas Chinese remittance. The work studies the history of Chaozhou people who traveled to Southeast Asia to make a living. A two-way linked spindle structure turns continuously, so the historical scenes overlap without end. The jewelry pieces follow the idea of slices of history, and each piece gives the wearer a different role within the same story. Brass, stainless steel, aluminium, resin and acrylic are used, shaped by laser cutting and 3D printing.

CityWood Artwork

CityWood

CityWood is a wooden map artwork that presents a city as a three dimensional object. City streets, water and landscape are represented by separate wooden layers, and the layers create depth. The layers are set in a wooden frame that measures 450 mm in width, 450 mm in height and 30 mm in depth. The artwork can hang on a wall or stand on a desk. The natural grain of the wood makes each map different.

Frail World Table

Frail World

The Frail World table on wide stable legs from the side looks unshakable, like the universe itself. However, when viewed from above, its thin lines, enclosed in a circle of tabletops, form the symbol Pacific on the fragile glass. Life and peace on Earth look just as fragile from space. When a fragile peace is destroyed by war, it is very difficult to sit down at the negotiating table. But that is the only possible salvation.

Interpreting Discomfort Oil Paint

Interpreting Discomfort

Interpreting Discomfort is a series of oil paintings about personal space and social pressure. The works show hands and eyes in staged scenes that recreate everyday moments of unease. Caring actions can bring people closer, yet too much attention can also cause discomfort. The paintings combine two techniques. Indirect painting builds a black and white base that is then glazed with color. Direct painting applies mixed color straight onto the surface. The series is made with oil paint on canvas and wood panel, and it is shown in galleries as a starting point for conversation.

Boat Functional Sculpture

Boat

Boat is an interactive toy that responds to changes in the surrounding environment. A highly sensitive vibration sensor starts the movement, so the toy can be activated by sound or gesture instead of a mechanical switch. The main drive shaft carries a concave directional track, and the parts inside the groove shift by gravity and push the toy forward. The motion follows the crawling pattern of arthropods, whose spine is echoed by the main axis. All modeling, transmission parts and hardware are made by 3D printing, so complex structures are formed without assembly.

Leaf Tall Vase

Leaf Tall

Nature materializes strongly in the Leaf Tall vase created by French designer Pierre Foulonneau. The vase associate crystal and metal in a poetic design where a golden leaf sits in a transparent pedestal. The results is a vase bearing an unalterable natural presence, even when empty. And, during flower season, the metal part acts as a receptacle for greeting and showcasing fresh flowers.

Tear and Discover Furniture

Tear and Discover

Tear and Discover is an art installation made of four household products: a speaker, a floor lamp, a clock and a fan. Each object is fully wrapped in leather, so the sound, the light, the time and the air flow are hidden. To use a function, the visitor must cut the leather cover. The leather and its labels stand for the symbolic value of goods, while the parts inside provide the use value. All covers are shaped by hand from 1.5 mm vegetable-tanned leather and held by stainless steel supports. The work questions the relation between sign and function in consumption.

Crowd Gathering of Dots Installation Art

Crowd Gathering of Dots

Crowd Gathering of Dots is an art installation created for the lobby of a hotel in Tainan, Taiwan. The work covers a surface of 100 square meters. Handmade ceramic spheres are arranged across the wall to suggest the flow and spatial tension of a gathering crowd. Each sphere is finished with a glossy black glaze that reflects the appearance of every visitor. Because the spheres are shaped by hand, each one differs slightly. Bronze and gold feet hold the spheres in place, and light projection creates changing three dimensional shadows.

Throbbing Stillness Vessel

Throbbing Stillness

Throbbing Stillness is part of a series of vessels exploring abstract ideas, concepts and existential questions. The paradox of Throbbing Stillness is that instead of the expected functionality of a flower vase, it implies the existence of a space capable to contain further communication with the viewer. Through its organic form it manages to transcend the rigidity of the medium and it seems to be vibrating with vital energy. Its shape and color highlight concepts such as emptiness, potentiality, expansion.

Stalker Chest of Drawers

Stalker

Stalker is a chest of drawers designed to stand free in the centre of a room, so it can be approached from any side. The piece is made of beechwood, ash wood and plywood, with mirror, galvanized steel and tinned steel elements. Eleven non-identical drawers are placed unevenly on all four sides and are concealed behind a vertical dark texture, while tinned steel handles mark their positions.
